Asparagus Casserole

2 pounds fresh asparagus, trimmed, cut into 1-inch pieces
1/4 cup butter, cut into small pieces
1/4 cup flour
2 cups milk or half-and-half
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
6 hard-cooked eggs, sliced
1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
1 cup crushed potato chips

In a large sauce pan, bring 1/2 inch of water to a boil. Add asparagus; cover and boil for 3 minutes or until crisp-tender. Drain well; set aside.
In a large sauce pan over medium heat, melt butter. Stir in flour until smooth. Gradually add milk. Bring to a boil over medium heat; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Add salt and pepper.
In an ungreased 11-inch-by-7-inch baking dish, layer half of the asparagus. Cover with half of the sliced eggs, shredded cheese and sauce. Sprinkle with potato chips. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until heated through.
